Description
Offered for sale is a delicate sterling silver Joseph Willmore vinaigrette that takes the form of an elongated hexagon. It has an engraved foliate decoration on one side and a flower at the center on the other side. The bale on the vinaigrette allows you to wear it as a pendant. It can be used to carry a personal scent, herb , etc. During the early 19th century, the vinaigrette was an essential fashion accessory . The oval cartouche measures 7/8" wide x H 1/4" x D 5/8". It weighs 4.7 grams. It has a gold standard mark as well as makers marks on the interior. It has a Birmingham, England stamp that dates to 1814. The cartouche opens and closes perfectly and is in great condition. The interior grille with pierced circular openings has a gold wash. This vinaigrette came from a museum de-acquisition so it has been taken care of very well. Numbers on the interior denote the acquistion date, and reference numbers from the Chicago Museum of Art. Joseph Willmore was one of the most prolific and renowned silversmiths to have worked in the famous Birmingham silver industry, and any of his silver work makes a great collector's item.
