This is a tiny Antique sterling silver, hand engraved, gold gilded inside Vinaigrette. These small Vinaigrettes were also called scent boxes, as they typically held a sponge that was saturated with perfume. The cities in the 1700's and well into the 1800's had open sewers; and Ladies and Gentlemen would carry a scent box to inhale and block out the stench of open sewers in the cities. This is a tiny piece; about 15/16” long, or about 1 1/4” long, including the ring x 9/16” wide x 7/16” tall weighing a mere .3 of an ounce or 9 grams. The top and bottom are hand engraved with the top having a double punch dot decorated border with a cross hatch pattern inside panel and a tiny navette shape escutcheon intended for engraving initials but is unengraved. The bottom has the same punch dot decorated border as the top, but an inside panel with a double border of wavy punch dot decoration. The front and 2 sides have simple line engraving. There is a loop on the side with an attachment ring intended for a watch chain as a fob or a chatelaine hanging from a chain on a waist chain worn by a lady of the period. The insides have all their gold gilding but is faded due to the chemicals in the perfume over time. The base has a small cut out at the top rim opposite the grill hinge for a fingernail to lift the grill from the base. The piercing of the grill is a diamond pattern, typical of this period. When closing the grill, one has to ensure the grill is seated all the way into the base by gently pressing the end of the grill into the base at this fingernail notch. The top seats tightly on the base and has a nice click when closing. This piece has all the characteristics of a tiny English vinaigrette from the 1810-1820 period and has no hallmarks; but is stamped 925 STERLING on the front lip, so perhaps this is an American piece. This would be a perfect gift or keepsake and would fit into any Vinaigrette, smalls, pendant, or Jewelry collection.
